If you are on an Origin for Windows controlled game (Patch 1.69) or a Steam install (Patch 1.67), then Origin or Steam will patch your game for you. Manual patching is now only relevant for disc installs not controlled by Origin for Windows and for the Mac version of the game. Patch 69 is a game patch for The Sims 3. It was released on November 12, 2015. It is the first (and so far only) game patch for The Sims 3 released after the debut of The Sims 4. There's a new Sims 3 update available now in Origin. If automatic updates are enabled in Origin's 'Application Settings', the game will update once you open.

If its an older game you are playing and you are running Windows 7 or Windows 8 it may not work, if you right click the .exe file and choose Properties and then Compatibility you can change this to run in Windows 98/ Windows 2000 etc. You can find more information on the Beginners Help page here
